Prediction of Leaf Area in Individual Leaves of Cherrybark Oak Seedlings ( Quercus pagoda Raf . )

چکیده
The prediction of leaf area for cherrybark oak (eerm pagoda Raf.) seedlings is important for studying the physiology of the species. Linear and polynomial models involving leaf length, width, fresh weight, dry weight, and internodal length were tested independently and collectively to predict leaf area. Twenty-nine cherrybark oak seedlings were grown in a greenhouse for one growing season and a total of 468 leaves were collected. Leaf area was polynomially related with leaf length or width, but linearly related with the cross product of length and width. Average leaf area for flush 3 was significantly greater than those of other flushes. However, variation in leaf area among flushes did not affect the models. Relationship between leaf area and length (or width) was consistent. Since leaf length is easy to measure and does not require destruction of leaves, it can be effectively used to predict leaf area in cherrybark oak seedlings.

Comparative Gas - Exchange in Leaves ofIntact and Clipped , Natural and Planted Cherrybark Oak ( Quercus pagoda Raf . ) Seedlings
Gas-exchange measurements, including CO2-exchange rate (net photosynthesis), stomatal conductance, and transpiration, were conducted on intact and clipped cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf.) seedlings growing in the field and in a nursery bed. Seedlings inthe field, released from midstory and understory woody competition, showed significant increases in gas-exchange compared to non-released se...

Seedlings of cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Rafinesque), Nuttall oak (Quercus nuttallii Palmer) and overcup oak (Quercus lyrata Walter) were grown under two light levels, partial (20 percent) or full sunlight, to study physiological acclimation of leaves to low light availability. Shifts in leaf morphology were noted for seedlings raised beneath partial sunlight, and photosynthetic light respon...
متن کاملGrowth and biomass distribution of cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf.) seedlings as influenced by light availability
Cherrybark oak (Quercrrs pagoda Raf.) seedlings were established and raised in the field under four light levels (100%. 53%. 27% or 8% of full sunlight) to study the effects of light availability on their shoot growth, biomass accumulation, and biomass distribution. After two growing seasons, greatest stem growth was observed on seedlings which received intermediate light levels, and this growt...
متن کاملEffects of Light Regimes on the Growth of Cherrybark Oak Seedlings
Light regimes vary significantly within small forest openings, rangingfrom full sunlight to total shade, and they may affect the establishment and early growth of oak seedlings. We designed modified shadehouses to simulate the complex light conditions within forest openings and tested the effects of daily photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), time of direct light exposure, and the ratio of...
متن کاملPhotosynthate distribution patterns in cherrybark oak seedling sprouts.
We used 14C tracers to determine photosynthate distribution in cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf.) seedling sprouts following release from competing mid-story vegetation. Fall acquisition of labeled photosynthates by seedlings followed expected source-sink patterns, with root and basal stem tissues serving as the primary sinks. Four months after the seedlings had been labeled with 14C, they we...
